What is Myofascial Release Yoga?

The focus of myofascial release yoga is releasing tension and alleviating pain. It’s about stepping up the body’s flexibility and mobility, which naturally improves your posture and performance in any physical discipline you practice, whether it is yoga or sports.
This goal is achieved by applying pleasure in a gentle way on trigger points throughout the body, which in turn lets go of the tension that might be held in the fascia or connective tissues that unite and support our organs, muscles, joints, nerve fibers, bones and so many other structures in our body.
Fascia is the fibrous tissue that glues the cells in our body together, creating a 3D web that extends from head to toes. What working on fascia means is working on our mind, behavior, and emotions altogether because the tension in any area leads to a knock-on effect throughout our body. For example: leading a sedentary lifestyle where you sit for long periods, can cause bunching in your chest, and in turn, cause a weaker upper back. This is a practice that targets your well-being with a holistic and highly anatomy-based approach.

What makes Myofascial Release Yoga different from other yoga styles?

To achieve the intention of myofascial release yoga, different props are used such as tennis balls, foam rollers, yoga blocks, and at times massage techniques. By addressing trigger points directly you target the cause of common issues such as sore feet, stiff shoulders, neck pain, headaches and other discomforts that come from muscular tension due to stress, lack of mobility, low physical activity, poor posture and injuries.

Is Myofascial Release Yoga right for you?

You will enjoy these classes if:
  • You want to reduce tension in your body
  • You recognize knots in your muscles and want to release them
  • You want to reduce overall stress by working on its effects on your body
  • You lift heavy weights and want to assure physical balance

It is important to keep in mind that:
  • You should avoid applying pressure directly on your bones
  • You should not target sensitive or swollen tissue
  • You should stay within comfort, this practice is not meant to be painful during class or after.
  • It is beneficial to maintain a steady breath throughout the practice
  • If the prop you’re using (tennis ball, block, roller) feels too intense, you can drop a towel or blanket over it. Feel into what is best and more gentle for your body

Let Myofascial Release Yoga support your health with its many benefits

Myofascial release yoga uses techniques that significantly improve the movement of the connective tissues around your joints, which not only promotes flexibility and movement but protects them from unnecessary friction and poor lubrication. Joints are not the only ones that benefit - the flow of blood in your body will also improve as you release knots in the muscles and support your tissues to be hydrated and oxygenated. Another amazing outcome of this practice is the relief of soreness and stiffness, it clears pathways for nerve signals going to the brain which works on your balance and coordination. Overall, treat emotional stress as you ease into this therapeutic style of yoga.
